History

Since its inception, the United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County (UWOLC) has promoted the wellbeing of the Lafayette-Oxford-University (LOU) community through giving, volunteerism, and advocacy. Originally incorporated as the United Fund in 1970, the UWOLC joined the United Way network in 1975 and has served as a unifying force by bringing individuals, organizations, businesses, and public entities together to make a meaningful difference.

The UWOLC has raised and invested millions of dollars in the LOU community by supporting dozens of organizations that work hand in hand to meet the needs of Lafayette County residents. The UWOLC has also developed and coordinated community coalitions to prevent as well as respond to substantial issues throughout Oxford and Lafayette County. By promoting giving, advocacy, and volunteerism through its many partnerships, the UWOLC makes a significant impact in the lives of local residents on a daily basis.

1970 – United Fund Incorporated by B.B. Bowen, Jr., Douglas McDonald, and Omar Craig

1971 – First Drive Conducted, Chaired by Robert Khayat

1985 – First Paid Executive Director, Donna Long, Hired Part-Time

1991 – Executive Director, Donna Long, Hired Full-Time

1995 – Second Staff Member, Community Service Director, Hired Part-Time

1996 – First Community Needs Assessment Conducted in Conjunction with ProMatura Group

2000 – Community Service Director Hired Full-Time

2009 – Donna Long, Executive Director for 25 years, Retired

2010 – Community Transition Committee Convened to Guide the UWOLC’s Agenda in Health, Education, and Income

2013 – Kathy Sukanek, Executive Director, Retired

2013 – Alice Ricks, Executive Director, Hired

2016 – Kurt Brummett, Executive Director, Hired
